Using salt in agriculture: benefits and best practice

Agriculture

Salt meets a basic need

Animals need sodium and chlorine for normal body function, and salt is the simplest way to make sure that need is met in Norwegian farming.

Salt blocks for grazing animals

Salt blocks are a common solution for sheep, cattle, horses and goats on pasture. Some animals, such as cattle with a copper deficiency, need salt blocks with added copper, while others do best with a variant without.

  • Salt blocks without copper, for horses, sheep, cattle and goats
  • Salt blocks with copper, for cattle with a copper deficiency
  • Feed salt as an additive in feed mixes
  • Sodium bicarbonate in feed for poultry, livestock and fish

Salt in feed and fertilizer

The right use of salt in feed can improve production results, for example in egg production and in the growth of broilers. Salt also plays a role in fertilizer production, where it helps balance the soil pH level.

Good access to salt is a small investment that shows clearly in animal health and production.
