Why animals need salt

Sodium and chloride are essential for the animal body to function as it should. Sodium is important for the nervous system, while chloride helps keep the acid-base balance in the stomach stable. Together, these substances keep the body's fluid balance in check.

Signs of salt deficiency

Unvaried feeding, low fertilization or feed with low sodium content can leave animals with too little salt. Typical signs are muscle cramps, a rough, coarse coat, and reduced appetite.

A simple supplement can make a big difference to animal welfare and production.

How salt is used in agriculture

  • Salt licks for free intake as needed
  • Direct addition to the feed mix
  • Preserving grass and maize silage

Rock salt recommended

We usually recommend rock salt for animal feed, since it is fine-grained and well suited to hygienic use in feed production.
