Salt as a raw material in industrial processes
Beyond cooking and roads, salt is a key input in several industrial processes, from oil drilling to smelters.
Drilling fluid and oil extraction
Fine, refined rock salt is used as an additive in drilling fluid for oil drilling. The salt is GMP+ certified and is delivered in 1000 kg bulk bags or smaller 25 kg bags, and must be stored dry and indoors to keep its quality.
Potassium chloride as a shale stabiliser
Potassium chloride is used in drilling fluid when drilling through clay and shale. The potassium ions swap places with other ions in the clay particles and make them more stable, so the borehole stays intact.
Smelters and the metal industry
In rotary smelting furnaces, salt is added to prevent dross fires. The right amount varies with the material being melted, and the salt is delivered in 1000 kg bags suited to industrial use.
From drilling rigs to smelting furnaces. The properties of salt make it a tool far beyond the kitchen counter.
