Record-size salt delivery to Rogaland

Roads & Snow Melting

Publisert 31. oktober 2022

Background

The vessel MV La Louise discharged around 30,200 tonnes of sea salt from Tunisia at the Westports terminal in Risavika outside Stavanger. Norway imports a total of around 1.2 million tonnes of salt a year, and this single delivery is considered one of the very largest ever to reach the country.

What it means for the region

The salt will be used to keep roads and footpaths in Sandnes, Stavanger, Karmøy and Haugesund clear through the winter season. The terminal is intended as a permanent depot for all of Rogaland, and can also serve as an emergency stockpile of salt for the rest of Norway.

The way forward

  • In time, the terminal will also be able to supply salt to the oil and offshore sector and the food industry
  • Tunisian salt was chosen over Spanish salt because of its quality
  • Risavika was chosen as the receiving site because of its favourable location for ships from all over the world

We want to be a full-service, local supplier of salt to industries in the region.
