More than softening
Salt is used at several stages of water treatment, from regenerating ion exchangers to adjusting pH and alkalinity in piping systems.
Ion exchange and regeneration
In waterworks and industrial plants, a resin swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium. Salt tablets are used to make the brine that regenerates the resin once it is saturated.
pH adjustment with sodium bicarbonate
Sodium bicarbonate is used to stabilize pH and alkalinity in water, which reduces the risk of corrosion in piping systems.
- Regeneration of ion exchange resin
- Stabilization of pH and alkalinity
- Reduced water activity, which inhibits microbial growth
- Water binding in the production of foods such as sausages and cheese
Salt and saltwater in nature
The salt content of water also affects where it freezes and which species can live in it. Seawater freezes about two degrees lower than fresh water. Freshwater fish tolerate only a small share of salt, brackish-water fish somewhat more, while saltwater fish need a concentration of around three and a half percent to thrive.
Salt is one of the most versatile aids we have in water treatment, from industry to food production.
