Which properties of salt can affect water?
Salt is more than a seasoning. In water it changes the freezing point, density and acidity, and these are exactly the properties that make salt so useful in everything from winter maintenance to water treatment.
Salt water freezes at lower temperatures
When salt dissolves in water, it increases the water's density and lowers its freezing point. This is why seawater freezes at about -2 °C, while fresh water freezes at 0 °C. The property is used, for example, when we salt roads in winter to prevent ice from forming.
Reduced water activity and stabilized pH
Salt reduces water activity, which is a measure of how much free water is available to microorganisms. Lower water activity inhibits microbial growth, which matters in food preservation. Salt also helps stabilize the pH in water systems, which is critical in many industrial processes and in aquaculture.
Ion exchange and softening of hard water
In industrial settings, salt is used in ion exchangers to soften hard water. The process replaces calcium and magnesium ions, which cause hardness, with sodium ions.
Salt tablets are a concentrated form of sodium chloride. They make dosing simpler, regenerate the ion exchange resin effectively and are easy to store and handle. This keeps the water treatment plant working at its best over time.
The right salt for the right purpose is often the difference between a plant that runs smoothly and one that needs constant attention.
