Salt licks for livestock: a guide for sheep, cattle, horses and goats

Why do livestock need a salt lick?

Pasture grass and roughage usually contain too little sodium to cover the need through the season. A salt lick lets the animals cover the need themselves, a little at a time, and also supports better fluid balance and feed intake.

Sheep

Sheep are sensitive to high copper levels. Choose a lick made for sheep, and never use a salt lick made for cattle without checking the content first.

Cattle

Cattle have a higher daily need and wear down the lick quickly. Put out several licks for large herds, so that all the animals get access.

Horses

Horses tend to settle in by the salt lick over time. Place it near the water source, so the animal drinks naturally after licking.

Goats

Goats are curious and use the lick often. Hang it in a holder, so that it stays clean and dry.

A salt lick lying in the mud is left untouched. Placement matters as much as the choice of type.

Placement and storage

  • Outdoors: raise the lick off the ground and shield it from rain

  • Indoors: use a holder near water and the feed rack

  • Storage: dry and frost-free, so the lick does not crumble
