Tips and tricks for getting the most from calcium chloride

Roads & Snow Melting

How to store calcium chloride correctly

Calcium chloride should be kept dry, preferably under cover. The bags tolerate cold well, but quality keeps best if they are stored indoors and shielded from direct sunlight. If you have opened a bulk bag, it pays to use it up fairly quickly. If it has to be stored temporarily, a good seal can help prevent the contents from clumping.

Got lumps in the bag?

A simple trick is to lift the bag about a meter up with a forklift and drop it onto a hard surface. The impact often breaks up the lumps. If the lumps are larger, you can dissolve them in water and use the mixture as a liquid instead.

Well-stored calcium chloride gives more even spreading and a better effect, both summer and winter.

Bulk bag or 25 kilos, which suits best?

  • A bulk bag is cheaper per kilo and efficient for machine spreading over large areas, but should be used up shortly after opening
  • A 25 kg bag is easier to handle for smaller areas, and well suited to de-icing down to minus 5 degrees

How calcium chloride reduces dust in summer

In spring and summer, calcium chloride works best when the surface is slightly damp, preferably right after rain. The chlorides draw moisture from the air, and it is precisely this property that suppresses dust and keeps gravel roads from drying out.

Winter use down to minus 40 degrees

Calcium chloride keeps its melting effect all the way down to minus 40 degrees, which makes it a good choice on pavements, in back yards, on steps and entrances, and on delicate surfaces such as paving slabs and slate.

Correct dosage on roads

As a rule of thumb, you can count on around 800 kilos of calcium chloride per kilometer on a road five meters wide. The product has a density of 0.835 grams per cubic centimeter, and we recommend using a spreader for even distribution, on both long and short stretches.
