Why salt
Salt is used to stop ice from bonding to the road, to keep snow from packing into hard ice, and to dissolve ice that has already formed. Municipalities and contractors are advised to start salting early in the season, in both above-freezing and below-freezing temperatures.
Other types of salt
On sidewalks, cobblestones and footpaths, calcium chloride works well down to minus 40 degrees, and is an alternative where ordinary road salt falls short.
What motorists should keep in mind
- Use winter tyres or studded tyres and adjust your speed to the conditions
- Consider whether the trip is necessary when the roads are slippery
- Test the brakes carefully along the way to feel the grip of the road
A Norstat survey from 2019 showed that over 350,000 Norwegians had fallen and injured themselves on ice during the year.
