New EU climate quota system

Publisert 25. oktober 2023

What is the EU climate quota system?

The EU is introducing a common system that caps how much CO2 equivalent can be emitted each year in selected sectors. The system works like a market: participating companies manage their share of a common quota register, and the price of emissions is set by supply and demand. The scheme covers energy supply, industry, aviation and shipping, among others, and is meant to make emission cuts happen where they are most cost-effective.

Gradual phase-in towards 2026

The system is being introduced step by step from January 2024 and is to be fully implemented in 2026. For shipping, which is central to Saltimport's logistics, this means that emission-related costs gradually become part of the operating picture.

We want to protect our customers from surprises, so we pass on any quota costs without markup.

How Saltimport is handling the transition

Saltimport ships large volumes of salt by sea and therefore pays close attention to its own climate footprint. The company works continuously on better capacity utilization and more efficient sailing routes, and is also exploring zero-emission alternatives for the future.

  • The quota system phases in from 2024 and is fully in place in 2026
  • Covers energy supply, industry, aviation and shipping
  • Saltimport passes on quota costs without extra markup
  • Cooperation with Viridis Bulk Carriers on ammonia-powered ships for zero-emission freight

Towards zero emissions in the logistics chain

Together with the shipping company Viridis Bulk Carriers, Saltimport is looking at the possibility of shipping salt over short distances with ammonia-powered vessels. The goal is a freight network without emissions, and the project is one of several steps towards the company's ambition of zero emissions in every part of its logistics.
