What is sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) used for?

A mineral with many names

Sodium bicarbonate is a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3, known by names such as baking soda and bicarbonate of soda. Although the product is often made synthetically from limestone, brine and carbon dioxide, the end result is the same whichever name is used.

Four grades, different uses

Feed for animals and fish

In agriculture and fish farming, sodium bicarbonate is added to feed to support steadier digestion. The substance works as a buffer in the rumen of ruminants and can contribute to better growth and production in poultry, cattle and farmed fish alike.

Food

Most people know baking soda as a leavening agent in baking. Besides cakes and bread, it is used in drinks, electrolyte mixes and beer brewing.

Technical use

One grade is intended for industrial use, including chemical synthesis, dye production, leather tanning, fire extinguishing equipment, water treatment and plastics production. This grade is not suitable for consumption.

Pharmaceutical grade

The strictest grade is produced at a facility approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and is used in medicines and medical products.

The same compound covers everything from animal feed to pharmaceuticals. What differs is the purity and the production process.
