Why do we use salt on the roads?
Salt lowers the freezing point of water, so ice and snow melt even when the temperature is below zero. Salting is therefore an effective preventive measure against slippery roads, and not only a fix once the ice has already formed.
Which salt is used for road salting?
The most common is sodium chloride, ordinary sea salt, in a grade matched to moisture content and grain size for spreading. At very low temperatures, from around minus 6 and down toward minus 40 degrees, calcium chloride is used, as it has a better melting effect in severe cold.
Three ways salt is used in winter
- Anti-icing prevents frost, rain or precipitation from freezing into ice on the road
- Anti-compaction stops snow from packing hard, which makes ploughing easier
- De-icing breaks up ice that has already formed, and is the least effective method
What is the difference between salt and grit?
Grit and gravel give better grip there and then, but the effect is short-lived. Salt deals with the ice itself and gives what is often called bare roads, with an effect that lasts longer. Salt is therefore best suited to roads with heavy traffic and changing winter weather.
The right dosage is decisive. Too much salt burdens nature unnecessarily, too little gives a weaker effect.
Salt and the environment
Road salt can affect nature negatively if used in excessive amounts, for example by seeping into nearby lakes and ecosystems. It is therefore important that those who drive the salt trucks have good knowledge of correct dosage and timing.
When should you salt?
The best time is before the snow arrives. That stops the snow from freezing onto the road surface and forming ice, instead of having to remove ice afterwards.
Can you use salt on concrete?
Ordinary road salt is not recommended on concrete. Calcium chloride is a gentler alternative and is recommended instead, for example on steps and entrances at temperatures below minus 10 degrees.
